 Ordinals numbers 

In English called ordinal numbers. The word 'ordinal' comes from 'order', this is because ordinal numbers are what help us order objects, ideas, etc. Examples in Spanish: first, second, thirteenth. Examples in English: first, second, third, nineteenth, twenty-first, etc.

How are ordinal numbers written in English?

• Rule

Ordinal numbers are formed using the digit number followed by the last two letters of the written word. Thus, first is shortened to 1st, second is 2nd, etc.

• Gender

English, unlike Spanish, there are no articles of gender (el, la) so in Spanish we would say 1st or 1st, while in English we would always say 1st.

• Number

If we want to say "the first", "the fifth", etc. in both English and Spanish it is written in words.

"The first two girls in class" (Las primeras dos niñas en clase).

• 3rd- third

• 5th- fifth
• 6th- sixth
• 7th- seventh
• 8th- eighth
• 9th- ninth
• 10th- tenth
• 11th- eleventh
• 12th- twelfth
• 13th- thirteenth
• 14th- fourteenth
• 15th- fifteenth
• 16th- sixteenth
• 17th- seventeenth
• 18th- eighteenth
• 19th- nineteenth
• 20th- twentieth
• 21st- twenty-first
• 22nd- twenty-second
• 23rd- twenty-third

A hyphen is added to two-digit numbers ending in y, just as it happens with cardinal numbers.

• 30th- thirtieth
• 31st- thirty-first
• 32nd- thirty-second
• 33rd- thiry-third
• 34th- thiry-fourth

The tens end in -ieth and the -y is dropped.

• 40th- fortieth
• 50th- fiftieth
• 60th- sixtieth
• 70th- seventieth
• 80th- eightieth
• 90th- ninetieth
• 91st- ninety-first
• 92nd- ninety-second
• 93rd- ninety-third
• 94th- ninety-fourth

Numbers greater than 100th are separated by an and.
